Why do you prefer Direct Connect?

32 posts in this topic

This is just a bit of fun, but why do you prefer to use DC over the many other protocols/networks on offer (for example - eDonkey2000, Gnutella2, Bittorrent, etc)?

I use DC mainly for high quality uberstandard music (Ubernet). :)

For me it's mainly the sense of community - I'm not a public-hub user, I'm only active in private hubs.

I use it because of the community side too, and some occasional downloads, but not much

I usually use it for sharing files with others and only use it for private hubs. I mainly get music off of Gnutella2 and bigger files off of BitTorrent anyways. Nothing can beat BT in speed unless you include Usenet.

  • It's community based
  • Files are more trustworthy in a private hub, you can't get any more verified then someone actually using it.
  • You get a lot of support for what you're downloading
  • Generally you don't have to worry about waiting for sources
  • You occasionally get users with lots of rare files
  • I could go on :)

DC's definitely in my top 2 for protocols.

By far my 1st one. combined with PW for releases its the best (even though PW is G2), once connected to several open hubs speed is as equal as BT and no share-ratio tension. i use it mainly for older files. + i like the chat and comunity. and only downside sometimes are stupid hub rules and awfull and annoying searching.

I use DC for music, softwares and old movies

I use BT for new movies (i only want DVD or DVDrips)

I like DC over Opeenap's based softwares (Lopster,WinMx,Xnap) because hubs have good rules (minum slot open, minimum share ecc ecc) so i alwys find people with free slots.

The sense of community is important. In a good private hub with regular users (which means, active, responsible people) you can learn a lot of new things and you can help each other out with finding files. I use BitTorrent for the newest releases and DC to search for hard-to-get stuff and for the social side.

The public hubs are good for finding additional sources when using StrongDC++ based clients.

Community first of all. Then it'd be that I'm often looking for rare files that aren't available anywhere but DC and ED2K (which as you all know takes forever to get through a queue)

Community... and older files/music. New films and games just have to come from BT though.

I enjoy it for the widest availability of things I am looking for first. Additionally, I much prefer the more personal relationship of downloading files from someone who has a name. I find this greatly affects the quality of the files offered. And I too enjoy the community.

I prefer usenet to BT for new stuff. Though you have a point about DC being slow at dispersing new material.

Not in the hub I'm in. Whenever somebody finishes a new torrent it's shared in the hub (for example, the new Lost).

Well it gets the file out there, but DC lacks any announcement system. (Well, most hubs) And then the source only has so many slots.

think the bright sides of the slot system:

when user that had no free slots get's free slot it's first come first to serve basis, so you don't have to wait in a queue, like in so many other P2P networks

Having since then started paying for usenet services and even for NZBs I now ahve to agree that for the newer stuff it is superior to BT in a number of ways. There are still some good BT sites out there for the harder to get stuff though. :)

The slowness of DC isnt really a factor for me as the network I am on is being run over our university network and so maintains an average speed of 350Kb/s or more. Also new content is spread pretty quickly, you have just got to remember who torrents what. Plus it makes for some interesting nights out when people some how recognise you in a club.

You: "Hey, aren't you the guy who shares the new Lost episodes in the hub?"

Him: "Sure am. I love to download your latest selection of porn at 3AM in the morning. It kills time.."

You: "How come the guy who shares the new Smallville episodes isn't here?"

Him: "I think he's waiting them at home, should be sharing them in the hub within 40 minutes."

:)

Slowness of DC++? Then you are NOT in the right hub, They actually would come faster on DC then most releases on Torrent etc. I would estimate an 2 hour delay after release. +/-
