I'm on the search for a new antivirus

33 posts in this topic

I need an antivirus, atm I'm completely unprotected and I can't stand any more useless cracked programs that lack instructions for how to install the crack and bla bla bla.

I'm thinking about bullguard, any thoughts?

Btw, isn't it possible to insert the crack into the program before packing it so people don't have to depend on instruction files that often get deleted for some reason that I don't understand....

Try ESET Smart Security RC1, or their new standalone Antivirus.

Or Avira? Anyway, AV is not enough. Add to it Spybot and some firewall at least.

Kaspersky Internet security 7 is the best protection

:P

a bit annoying while teaching the firewall, but the best possible :D

Tried Kaspersky once, made my comp freeze up when updating... A bit annoying since it updates at startup, or did for me, when the load on the cpu is the biggest... Took 15-20 minutes to get control of the comp enough to deactivate the update...

I remembered smth I've found not long ago. Please see, try and comment:

EDIT: Trying the AV, a bit annoying to set, but looks very safe. Already asked for "prompt for action" during "on-access" scan.

yeah, i remember that ... should have been kaspersky anti-virus 4.5 or sg :) ... things have changed since .. it can be set well to work smooth with other applications as well :)

or if you don't want to spend money on it .... try grisoft's antivirus + some firewall :)

I thought paidware is off the discussion. :) If included, I've heard good things of Dr. Web.

No no, paidware is on the map... I've grown tired of keygens that don't work and so on, might as well pay for a proggy and get it to work longer than a few months...

We actively discourage the downloading of copyrighted content. :)

Anti-virus software is something where it's worth spending a little bit of money to get the best that is availble instead of a free one.

I completely agree here.

I completely disagree here, just because best and free are not antonyms, also acc. to Mr. Torvalds (do not make me quote him :)).

Indeed, there is plenty of software catergories where the free applications are best, video players and music players for example. With antivirus software though I think it's widely accepted that the paid software is better. Most antiviruses that are free also have a paid version availble which I would assume is better (AVG and Avira for example). It's all opinion but I'm not seen any evidence to suggest the free antivirus software is better than some paid ones. AVG and Avira will rely on the revenue from their paid versions to pay for the developement of the free versions, any antivirus which didn't have a paid version would likely be inferior (lack of finance to maintain developement and protection against new viruses as quick as other companies). The companies which do give a free version just give a basic/crippled version of what they sell.

After trying ClamAV I agree for totally free versions. :) But as comes to having paid and free versions of one and the same product, I do believe that the free version just requires a bit more maintenance (f. ex. manual update). With such free versions the product is more wide-spread, viruses are reported faster, and updates for these are respectively faster, imo. Of course, the easiest way is to install some big fat expensive bundle, but I do insist that with a bit of craftsmanship and patience one can enjoy an equal, if not even better protection, w/o killing all his CPU/RAM. :)

Here's MY best advice and this is coming from someone who hosts hubs, downloads music and movies, burns cd's, dvds, and exposes his computers to all sorts of stuff:

I have been using Kaspersky Antivirus for a couple of years now and have had virtually NO problems. (this wasn't the case with Norton and some other programs).

Of course, for firewall protection I recommend using a good router with a hardware firewall.

Nothing against the free programs, but I've been around computer for a couple of decades now, and I can pretty much assure that while you might not always get what you pay for, you do pay for the best protections you can get. This is one area that being cheap can cost you a lot in the long run.

NOD32 is the best for me, hands down (have tries all the others over the years, but always come back to NOD32) ... offers highest realtime protection vs use of system resources ... used with a linksys firewall router and alphashield hardware firewall, I sleep well & fearless.

Anyone wanting a link so you can get rid of the 30 day virus that comes with the ESET NOD trial, please PM me, & I'll be happy to share. :D
