  1. I've been noticing this problem for a few days now - ApexDC++ starts up fine and everything is running normal. My computer usually is up and running 24/7 as well as ApexDC++, now while I left the house ApexDC keeps running. When I come back home and want to check my download queue, messages etc. I cannot get the focus on ApexDC++ window anymore, it stays minimized and windows taskmanager tells me the program is not responding. I tried upgrading to 1.3.6 but the problem didn't go away. When I kill the ApexDC++ task Windows comes up with the usual problem report popup which tells me that the application has crashed. When I restart ApexDC++ everything is just fine again, but will hang again some time later.

Can you reproduce this on a fresh install?

  2. Sure. I was saying that prioritising sequential segments should allow you to watch/stream your film before it has finished downloading. It will not allow you to stream straight away, as it will still try to randomise the segments but from the start of the file only. So really, after an hour or so (depending on your download speed), you should have enough to start watching the film.

We can look into an option for 2.0, but we are still working on the code for the time being. :)

  3. Yeah, it's in our changelog. We've already set first and last segments as priority for videos in our development code. I agree that not everybody may want to download this way, but it helps speed up the distribution of the file must faster.

Maybe we could introduce an option to prioritise sequential segments. But it still won't allow you to stream straight away, but should be able to do after an hour or so.

  4. I do believe one question ,... or rather the answer to it would help me out... that u guys can give me

the individual file list of each user of Apex DC is stored on the server(hub) or the computer of that individual user ?

i do remember that clicking the user from the hub list comes with the option get file list ... is that stored on that user`s computer ?

Yes, stored on the computer that initiated the Get filelist command.

  5. and about that ... why does the software nead to display the user IP`s adress actualy ... as a user why would i care what the other user IP adress is ...

There are ways to manipulate your IP address, look at programs like TOR.

  6. i`m in little if any trouble from this ... i can say how they did it ... they went to provider and logged in on the hubs accesing each local user and matched ip to the ip from provider login server and traced name & address on the contracts ,... they made printscreens of the shared folders and stuff ,.. not accusing of me of transfering any files to anybody but for simply listing/storing and making them availabile

Probably why you paid no fine. :)

Stick to private hubs for your own privacy.

  7. Hey Laurentiu83. Sorry to hear about that, did you pay a fine?

The software is legal in the developers' country. We warn anybody that openly admits to using it for infringing copyright and we do not provide support for those people. It is your responsibility to abide by the laws in your country. My suggestions for increased privacy are to always use the built in encryption and connect to a adcs:// hub. This will stop ISP or anybody snooping on your connection identifying the files you are downloading and keep your privacy. Try and stick to trusted private hubs.

  8. Great. You are going to include a configuration wizard in 2.0, right? I hope it will still be possible to provide a preconfigured ApexDC++, supplied with the xml files and settings set as needed... (not that some settings get reset, such as UseDHT)

We'll include the first run wizard for the new wxwidgets GUI. It probably won't make 2.0, but we'll see. Adding custom config should still be possible... it will just allow the user to select important options themselves if they want, or they can cancel.

Great news :)) I'm really excited to see and test the linux version of this famous client :)

You'll be one of the first. :)

  9. Any of you guys on Steam? I own the following to play:

    • Counter Strike: Source
    • Supreme Commander 2
    • Alien Swarm
    • StarCraft II
    • Age of Empires III
    • Guild Wars

You can add me using "[pw]lee" and suggest somes games to play. :)

  10. Sorry, I actually managed to get active in the end :) But now I've been having ANOTHER problem haha. I was registering for a public hub.. disconnected and tried to reconnect when I get another error..

"[14:22:07] *** An existing connection was forcibly closed by the remote host."

    :/

Most definitely a problem with your internet connection. Try restarting your router and reconnecting.

  11. Wow I didn't noticed the checkbox, but I guess I must have pushed it at least once.

The user with the endless TTH requests hasn't come back yet, I tried to msg him, but that failed. For now I just disconnected from his hub and it was quit.

For the CPU load, I'm on about 20 hubs, but that doesn't seem to be the problem, at night time when its quiet and nobody transfers the load is 1%. At daytime with 20mbit transfers (uploads only) its 20-30%. I set maximum compression to 0 already, else it would close to 80%. Encryption isn't used by most clients, and I/O shouldn't cause CPU use. Well, maybe its protocol overhead. Or maybe a 2.4ghz P4 is just old and slow :) But again other P2P clients do more traffic with much less CPU. Maybe on a long winter night I compile it and run it in the profiler...

Thanks for the checkbox help again :)

I'll do some tests on a fast connection and see if it's the cause.

  12. okay, thank you :)

Also, i was wondering if i could get some help? I cant remember how to use the program haha and it wont seem to let me open puclic hubs :/ can i download television programs on other hubs except my university hub?

You're able to connect to the public hubs if you get a working public hublist (there's a dropdown menu).

  13. Hey,

There should be a checkbox where the userlist used to be at the bottom to enable it again. Not sure about the TTH requesting, maybe find out what client he is using and ask him to monitor it. If it's a particular file, you could always unshare it :)

CPU usage is very good for me when transferring... seems to be the TTH issue. How many hubs are you in?

  14. I hope this is allowed here and that someone can help me. I used apex while i was in halls in my first year and here i am in halls again. can anyone help me log back into the hub?? i've forgotten the address :S

    Hi,

I don't think you're going to find the info unless one of the Uni hub users catches this message. Maybe ask about the Uni?

  15. It's been a few weeks since our last update and we recently reached 7,000,000 program downloads measured through our download server (SourceForge). We have been continuing to support the current 1.3 version while making strides in our highly anticipated 2.0 update. Since the last time we posted about jobs, we have had web developers, programmers and graphics designers applying to the positions posted.

Crise, our lead developer, is working on 2.0 and will soon be joined by a second programmer. Steven (from smctainsh.com) is working on our new website ready for 2.0 and we have hired Kuraj who has already updated our logo and other graphics ready for our new site launch. Even the Linux port is being worked on...

    Stay tuned. :)

    vioppyspoca and SowlayetlyRal like this

  16. I'll upgrade and give it a shot next month.

Will I have to re-hash after the upgrade?

    Thanks

(Only thing I can think of that changed since the last time it worked 100% was the Kaspersky 2010 Internet Security I loaded)

No you won't need to rehash. :)

  17. Love the app, works better than most.

We use it in a LAN environment once a month, 1 hub, about 300 users.

This weekend past I had a problem which some of my friends also had in the past.

Once I connect to the hub it seems as though the downloads are stored in the memory. starting off at around 1.3Gig total mem used, it steadily climbs to 4gig and then the PC becomes slow/unresponsive. After waiting a few minutes, there is suddenly some mem coming free, and then it starts getting used up again. Any ideas?

    We use a gigabit LAN and I have a i5 750, 4gig DDR3, Vista ultimate 64, Apex DC 1.3.1.

    Thanks

    Hey keyter,

I've not come across this behaviour before. Have you tried using the latest version? There has been some fixes in memory usage since 1.3.1.

  18. I don't see what the big deal is. In the hub I run, I detect the use of DHT and kick them with a link to a tutorial on how to turn it off. Simple. There hasn't been a drop in the user count and everybody running ApexDC++ is running the latest version. The only thing thats wrong with this situation is the hub owners. If they can't be bothered to learn LUA (or whatever) and write the DHT blocking script (or hell, copy it from someone on the internet), and instead choose to ban the client because it's easier, they really shouldn't be hub owners. With that being said, not being able to release a pre-configured version that disables DHT is a little over the line. I did some testing on my machine. I installed the client, looked at the DcPlusPlus.xml settings file and UseDHT was set to 0. I ran the client and looked at the settings file again and UseDHT was set to 1. What gives guys? I understand the need to include the feature but why force feed it to people?

First of all, thanks for coming into the conversation with a decent attitude towards this as a hub owner. Would it be possible for you to upload a sample of your lua script for others to use?

Regarding forcing DHT, it's enabled by default on first run. We have a first run wizard on the to do list that will ask the user whether to enable/disable it and what it does. Yeah, some users may skip over it but at least the information is there. :)

  19. Searching by keywords in DHT possible very easily. When your share is being indexed, it just splits all filenames to single words, then hashes each word and publish this hash to the network. Searching process runs in same way as when searching for hash, but it just specify that search is for keywords.

I was considering whether to put keywords searching into StrongDC++ DHT network, but decided that it would increase bandwidth a lot. Also, there is big probability that users wouldn't connect to another hubs anymore.

But that creates a large hub in itself...people will still connect to hubs for specific files. Although it would become an easy target for Anti-P2P organisations.

  20. Hi dudes,

I was just releasing my Apex-"Downloads" file (so that others can download from my downloads). In that time my Laptop shut down. I hardly managed to restart(It took me 10min). After opening windows and Apex there are no more my favorite hubs saved. They are all erased. Favorite user, too. I updated the latest version but it didn't help. Allow me to ask you two questions: Is there a way to find the connection-data of my hubs, so that I can save them and connect to them? Could it be that this thing( which seems like a pc crash) is an attack from a user in apex?(I use Apex in a private network with about 100 users without Dht)

    thank you

    please write back

    Afacan

    Hi Afacan,

Sorry to hear about your lost settings. Generally once you've lost your settings its very difficult to get them back. Try searching your entire machine and hidden folders for the favourites.xml file just in case. We're going to implement a settings backup method that will help you next time in 2.0.
