Show usernames and IPs in searchspy

19 posts in this topic

back when i used BCDC++, i used to like seeing who was doing the searches in the search spy. if you had connected to the person, it would show the username, if not, it would show the IP

im one of the top sharers on the hub im on so many people get stuff off of me, and i used to be able to see a large number of names in the search spy and what they were searching for

Yes, but that is spying on people and what they do. You only need a general idea as to what's most searched for on the hub, not what the username is.

Users need their privacy.

why wouldnt the client be configured to show every available piece of information?

users on a direct connect hub dont need privacy for information that they are sending out to everyone on the hub. the idea is also that people are searching for stuff that is shared. if i can see that someone is sharing porn, for instance, why cant i also see that someone is searching for it?

ive also been able to help people on numerous occassions to find what they are looking for when their search did not yield results but i was able to find what they needed because i could see who they were

Because smo can choose not to share the porn he has (OK, not quite true since the sharing of incomplete Dds), but he can't avoid the search to get it. :D

Maybe an option "Show my IP in Search Spy" will solve this...

Maybe an option "Show my IP in Search Spy" will solve this...

It'll fix this only if the searching user is with apex and has enabled that 'feature'.What about all other users ?

the only person i know who gets porn from the hub logs on with a different name from his usual one

the person you are downloading from can see the upload anyway

you can at least make it an option, rather than the default, to see users in search spy

its information that is already being broadcast and that some clients can pick up, why shouldnt apex be the same way?

Well we could pick it up if we wanted :)

Lee already answered your question - he doenst like spying on ppl.

But as you can see we don't :D

You dont answered or dont dislike spying ?And if u did like 'spying' - it'd have be implemented. So its kinda logical that you(or most of the devs) dont like it.

So, BBnet3000 let me tell how search spy actually works.First you must know how search works - your client sends rq(rq == request) to all of the users (the client know theit IPs from the hub)(Or it was the hub who makes the search ? I dont remeber. So if im wrong please corret me ) and if the users have a file fitting the description they "answer you" and you get a new line in your search results.Search spy actually remembers and counts these rq-s .So any client (if configured) can show you the IPs and if already has associated an IP with a current user - to show you the user's name directly.

To clear up about the option I proposed - since the Search Spy should be 1:1 in all clients, Apex will just be allowed/disallowed to report IP to hub/Search spy.

Configured is bit wrong word there, as you need to modify the src :)

Yes, I meant to be configured by the devs in the source :) .Sorry for the misunderstanding.

From my point of view, SearchSpy should be illegal. In some countries, members of "the law" are joining random hubs in order to find notorious "kriminelz" downloading illegal material. What do you think it will happen if you provide them with names and IPs ? They can easyly get search warrants from court and break into your appartment and legally search your computer ! Not even the pr0n is legal...

Considering they can fine you the full price of the downloaded software, what happens if you download the latest C++ bulder as a Suite tagged at over $3.000 ? And what about Windows ? Are you using a licensed copy ?

Not to meantion the music you download(ed) ! Every song is divided by the number of tracks the album has. And if the album is tagged at $15 and has 13 tracks, one song costs about $1. Imagine how much 2.000+ tracks cost ! Some albums cost more.

Long story's short: This feature could get alot of people into trouble !

As said above, the 'problem' comes from the protocol, not from Apex or any other client.Blame it.

And do I want apex to be able to report IPs - I don't care, really. But i think it'll be good if apex does - that way there will be more happy users :) .

And as I said above - IT CAN BE MADE SO THAT YOU CAN DECIDE form your side of the line whether to allow reporting nick and IP. For the real maniacs, who do it for the pleasure - Linux + Truecrypt, switches on the front door and windows close the PC's reset circuit. :D

Useful to kick users who are searching for the kind of stuff which implies they arn't the kind of person you want on a hub. Amusing when you ask them not to search for it too, they always log straight off.

this information is already out there on the hub, "the law" doesnt need apex to get it

i however want to keep using apex due to the fact that it has the best features in every other area
