Client Language

I want to request that a COMPLETE english.xml with ALL LINES the app EVER prints out...

this one for example is NOT in language file

"No connection could be made because the target machine actively refused it."

and many more that i dont know of yet :)

This would be very good for translators to be able to translate everything :D

p.s. wanted to change that line to "Connection Refused" much shorter and understands completely

edit: would be nice to add a link to that "complete" language file on customise site :ermm:

That particular line is generated by something lower level than ApexDC (like windows or visual studio), which is why it hasn't been included.

Nevertheless, passing forward error messages is horrible, and they should probably be detected then go through the normal translation like you request. It's just a load more work than you imagine.

your problem is about socket error messages; these messages used to be handled by older DC++ versions, and they were translatable by the language file.

but they preferred removing all this and translating the error automatically with the use of automatic Windows APIs. so, eventhough you do see these errors in English (your Windows must be in English), others see the errors in their own language (in the language of their Windows).

From the DC++ changelog:

-- 0.68 2006-01-08 --

* Now using standard windows error messages for socket errors

However would like to have Windows in English and only some apps in mother language. Also there can be more than one user accounts, and each user to speak different language (not very likely, but still).

Maybe implementing system default language detection and auto translation switching might be much better?

currently, it shows the standard socket error messages translated in the language of the OS... isn't it the same as what you're asking for?

Nope, I mean switching whole Apex UI to correct language.xml file, depending on system language.

But IMHO the Windows translation in Bulgarian is horrible (and partial, which drives me nuts more!), or at least it is so with the "popular" Windows. ;) So many peeps use English, and why this should prevent them from having the option of Bulgarian socket messages? I personally prefer all in English, but still...

some programs automatically switch themselves into my OS language once they're installed and i *hate* it when this happens.

however, an ability to choose the language in the installer would be cool :) (if there isn't such a thing already).

Windows translation in Russian is quite good. Or I just adapted to it too much). I prefer russian translation if it's really good (I prefer official translations, as far as they could be normal). I do not like that "русефекатор" thingy. I saw an ok/cancel dialog in uTorrent with two "Отмена" buttons when using russian translation. Really, I'm not crazy :). So, I dislike russian in uTorrent. But if translation is good, why not to switch to it automaticly and use your favorite app in your native language? So question is to make really good official translations, which would be included into distro.

Switch back and forget :). I can't remember any app I use, which do so and I dislike it's translation. Most commonly they do not now anything about OS language :) English, spanish, french and chinese are more common. Russia is a small country, you know :)

which would be included into distro.

this is one big problem: it would add a lot of files in the zip / installer and not everyone would need them. (and if you want to use one of them, you don't need all the others.)

however, there's a solution: download the language file automatically... i read something about this in the DC++ forum, and i think they're working on it :)

A 10k text file in an archive won't influence much on it's size :). Compression ratio of text files is really high

Why not use native language in your app: Menus/texts are shortest (I believe from my experience with BG, RU, ES) in English.

Why RU is not common: nor that Russia is a small country, you need to get rid of the KGB guys at last (and so we could be able to do the same). :)

One of my funny side-notes again, sorry for it :) :

RU-BG history is like a comics:

1. You freed us from the Turks.

2. The war weakened your army.

3. The communists used this and got the power in Russia.

4. You respectively infected us with communism. :)

Argh, you knew that! English translation in most cases have shorter words and phrases, so in some apps UI become distorted. But still, many people here asks for native language in the app. One of the most common question of the newbies in our hub (most people uses SDC) is "where can i get a russian translation of sdc?". So it much nicer if the app has is in native language out of box.

Funny thing about word's length. Some researchers found, that in battles between americans and japanese, americans were more efficient and responsive. Thats because average english command's length is about 5 letters, but japanese is 10 letters. Russian average command's length is about 7 letters, but in real situation commanders switchs to swearing and average length become 3 letters!

For example: "Рядовой Иванов, развернуть орудие влево и произвести залп по танку противника" vs "Вася, х@ярь по танку слева!"

Yes, really good example. For me the BG translation of Windows is like "Рядовой Иванов, развернуть орудие влево и произвести залп по танку противника". Desktop is "Работен плот", what else to say. :P

Of course, they are invisible and everywhere like... Hey, what's the nationality of Lenin & Trocki? :) AFAIK, not Russian.

I can make a screenshot of any part for you, if you wish to compare :)

Desktop - "Рабочий стол" here :P

As a mere mortal, haven't heard or seen anything about them :D

KGB is now FSB though :D

Товарищ, знай - пройдет она,

И демократия и гласность,

И вот тогда госбезопасность

Припомнит наши имена (с) :)

I'm rather socialist than democrat though, but this is another story :)

Hey, what's the nationality of Lenin & Trocki?

Trocki AFAIK jewish, not sure about Lenin. Some of his relatives were jewish, but there also were russian or even kalmyk, AFAIK, as I haven't read much about him.
