Broken emoticons

23 posts in this topic

We are using emoticon pack made for apex, which was successfully used on all versions from v1.1 up until v1.3, which now doesn't show emoticons for that particular emoticon pack.

Can you please examine what could be the problem?

Here is the emoticon pack in question: http://www.gusari.org/uploads/Gusari2009.zip

I didn't have any problems with my emoticons (namely "Chat Large") but my brother did. If I remember correctly, he disabled emoticons, restarted Apex, enabled this emopack, then restarted apex again and it worked.

I just did what you said, but with no luck. Emoticons are still not displayed.

Just to mention, at least 30+ users reported this so far, so I believe this is not just a simple issue, but some broken functionality.

Can some of developers try that emopack and see what causes the trouble (maybe some smilies are "incompatible" or something), so I can temporarily resolve the issue until some bugfix is released?

Thanks in advance.

The XML parser is completely replaced in the new Apex. It does not like invalid XML files and from what I just saw, the XML file is invalid. For example, line 11

<Emoticon HintText="014" PasteText="=<" Expression="014" Bitmap="Images\Gusari-2009\014.bmp"/>
should really be
<Emoticon HintText="014" PasteText="=<" Expression="014" Bitmap="Images\Gusari-2009\014.bmp"/>

In the XML attributes (between two quotation marks), change all < to <

> to >

& to &

" to "

and you should be ready to go.

Thanks a lot, that was the issue here :huh:

However, the last emoticon ":gusari:" is not displayed at all. It was a bit bigger image than other emoticons (152 x 125 pixels), which was also displayed correctly in previous versions of apex, but is not displayed correctly now (see the screenshot).

Was there any other change, regarding emoticons, other than new XML parser, that could've afftect this?

Thanks again for your help :)

The new xml parsing is stricter in terms of xml validity and otherwise... please see that there are no markup errors in your xml file (as explained in the post above).

the emoticons of winmessenger don't work with apex 1.3

Probably the xml file of the emoticon pack is invalid. Read my post if it is the case.

Make sure the XML file of your smile pack is valid (by using the w3c validator) as you might be overlooking something.
