Ok. Back to the topic. How about you make it so the stuff shared won't end up in their search window ? Because that's how they download. By searching. Either this or StrongDC++ or ApexDC++ should BLOCK or TERMINATE their downloads. Same thing.
They are to be considered THE leeches of the DC community. Even if they share, it's useless !
oDC is old and people don't know or don't care about that. And some of them even REFUSE to upgrade. oDC 'works' for them and they won't switch to anything else ! Period. Even if they were told by a total stranger or by their own mother ! They just refuse.
When they'll find themselves without download sources, mabey they'll think twice. :blushing:
-
I my case, yes. I'm using uTorrent and uploading like crazy !! I set it up to accept 300+ connections at a time, so that could be the cause to my problem. And to think that I've got a mear upload of only 22 kB/s...
Mabey it's just not enough for a proper connection with the hub. :)
-
I think we're all aware of it. Donno why it happens but if I right-click the hub tab and choose Reconnect it says something "Remote host ... "
The fix is to close the tab (right-click > Close), open up Favorite Hubs and [right-click] > Connect.
Usualy, there's nothing wrong with the hub since when i reconnect all 5.000+ users, almost of of them are still connected. I don't think it's possible for all the users to reconnect in such a short amount of time. So it's not the hub. Mabey some users are dropped by the server ?
This is a very rare case that happens in only a fraction of the hubs. Also, it happens once or twice a week (at least for me).
Hope this info helped.
-
And no, they are not leechers, because they don't block anythingThey block filelist even if they don't want to, wich is very close to blocking an upload.
-
So oDC should be dead soon ? It was dead long ago but (stupid? no, unaware?) people keep using it.
Why is that ? Is it because of that stupid program icon ? The all-seeing "eye" ? Wtf ? The world seems to be fulla n00bs...
Back to the topic: If uploading to these people is be blocked, I'm happy. It wasn't fair for the rest of us in the first place !
They should really consider switching to new(er) clients. If not by convenience, then by force !
USE THE FORCE MUSCLE ! USE THE FORCE !! L0L
Great job so far.

The crappy "fix" is to run some secondary oDC compatible client for downloading from oDC. The only shortage is the twin hashing and place for hash data. Two clients on the same hub ? Hmmm... Don't think so. Mabey if I were to change the nick, but still... It's such a drastick measure !
I'm guessing the mainchat won't work in the secondary client. Bad idea.
Nooo... DC++ devs removed support for non TTH downloads. What ??
-
I'm OK with the fact that they can't get our filelist. And I'm also 99% OK with the fact that I can't get THEIR filelist.
BUT WHY THE HELL ARE THEY STILL DOWNLOADING FROM ME ??
That's not frikin' fair ! :)
-
I agree. It's not like I can't download FROM him, it's just that he cannot upload TO me.
How is it fair if I can upload to these people and not download anything ? And it's not only about me, it's about everyone that uses Apex, Strong (2.0+) or regular DC (0.674+) and is present in those hubs !! If you declared war against oDC and non-TTH clients THEN WHY CAN THEY STILL DOWNLOAD ?
Back when I used Strong 1.0 and PeerWeb I just downloaded their fileslist. More out of curiousity of what they have to offer. Of what they've shared for other people. And only downloaded the stuff I needed or lost/forgotten.
I'm seriously considering of switching back to PeerWeb. Apex is a great client with a nifty feature that completly ignores users and I love that !! But it just doesn't cut it... At least for the time being.
I'm asking to COMPLETELY remove compatibility between these types. Non-TTH staying in their own hubs with buggy software and frequent crashes and ****... While TTH in public hubs. Or whatever hubs.
-
Well, there is. But Apex freezes and I have to manually kill the process via Task Manager (Ctrl+Alt+Del).
So it doesn'y have time to fill out an error log. The file is there, buy it's from an older crash(es).
If it doesn't notify the user that Apex has crashed then that long wouldn't get filled.

[...] Anyways as for the time being functionality to block oDC etc. won't be added, maybe later...Whhhhy ? :)
-
There should be a checkbox or something: "Allow NMDC-based clients (oDC) to connect."
I would be the first to uncheck it.
-
Hi CPU usage after a while (60-38-64-99%) makes it difficult to do anything else on my computer when I run Apex ... :|
And I noticed a crash when I right-click files in Queue (Ctrl+D) and select Remove. Donno why. It always does that to me so I'd thought I should report it.
I might fix the problem if I reinstall. I've used a Default.dctheme that passed through more then two type of clients so that must be it. Mabey it's logging something ? I'm resent in quite a few hubs so if it were to log some **** like mainchat messages it would be bad... :)

I's a great ideea. This way, we can just send someone the link to a speciffic file instead of telling them to go look for themselves in the "X\Sz\Xyz\..." folder. Think of the users with slow connections.
Personaly, my filelist exceeds 2 MB since i'm collecting .jpeg and .gif files so when somene downloads a a program under 1 MB from me or a project or a text tutorial that I wrote, then that person is forced to get my filelist in order to get all the files required. By giving them direct links to all the files needed would result in a happy(er) user.
I like the ideea. I'm down with it.
-
Wouldn't it be easier to simply ask for "maximum connections from same IP"?No. Think of the small networks such as schools or internet caffes having to share the same external IP ! You shuld use both the LAN IP and the external IP to determine that the user isn't under a different nick.
I can register a different nick in every hub and when I download something that I know only one user has, and if that user is present in most (if not all) the hubs I'm in, then I will take all the slots I need from that user. L0L sounds complicated... Anyway, I can take up to 10 slots from that user give the fact that there's a max limit of 10 segments.
I don't do that. I just wanted to say that someone else might.
SO... Back to the topic. This feature would be nice for a particular folder or file in some folder. For example someone wants to get some plugins for an X application. And those plugins are in that 'some' folder. If someone downloads a file in that folder or the folder itself, then a predefined message would pop up telling him some instructions or a small tutorial of what should and how should those files be used.
You'll probably need to read this post more then once to understant it completly. :)
-
You think developers even care ? :)
-
Each DC client should be able to connect to other DC client. If user needs to conenct he wil sacrifice resources.Pedja is RIGHT.
So why this topic exists? The main reason is that old clients ARE able to download from ApexDC++ but they souldn't - since You cannot download from them either. It would be reasonable and fair.
Also, Kulmegil is RIGHT as well.
Please do something about these leechers. Whenever they try to download, they should receive the same error when they try to get our filelist ! Ok, mabey cut them some slack... A LIMIT !
If the file is more then 10 MB the error should come into place. If it's less then 10 MB, download all they want. An option of how much MB would be nice too.
-
GREAT... IDEEA... EVER...
But not in Taskbar (wtf?), mabey in the Toolbar right next to the Away button.
Sometimes I get a good p2p line (2+ MB/s) and the usercount keeps reaching a large number for a second then drops down to a few. I hope it's not a bug. I'm guessing those people aren't using clients that fully support TTH. Lame oDC users...
-
Careful. Too much force spoiles the rotten egg. :)
-
Then tell me how can your client process an offline message to user X, when he/she comes online, if you are not online yourself smile.gifAnswer, there is no way to do that, w/o hubsoft's help...
And doing it the "improper" way (ie. ignoring scenario above), is just not worth it, because not everyone keeps their pc nor dc on 24/7.
What about "passing notes" to other ApexDC++ users ? Let's say Apex creates a 10 MB file 'UserMessages.dat' in the Settings folder. Or ".xml" ... whatever. In every major hub there are a few people that use Apex, so if I were to leave a message to someone, then the message would be stored on someone else's computer.
When the user I've sent the message enters the hub (or any hub that the 'carrier' is in >>> plus the user's IP so it doesn't end up to the wrong nick because of a stupid coincidence; do you have any ideea how many "spider-man" nicks are there ? ) But if I was online and the user I've sent the message enters the hub (or a hub in my 'Favorite Hubs' list), then Apex sends it automaticly without the need of a 'middle man'.
The message should be no more then 2 lines and/or 100 characters. 10 MB are enough for several people. And if the user doesn't get the message in 24 hours, the message gets deleted automaticly.
I think it's a nice ideea but kinda risky since there are hubs that allow ony certain tags, so Apex would not be identified. Users can also lie about their tags by that "Emulate DC++" check box... So it's not a flawless ideea. But it's just crazy enough to work ! :D
-
You're right. But most hub OPs don't care about us being able (or not) to connect to oDC users. They care about the numbers. If a hub has many users and the mainchat is active at all time, then that means the hub is popular ! Wich attracts even more users. Just like flies are attracted to ...sugar.
The more the merryer. :)
-
I do.
I get so pissed when someone downloads at my full upload speed (2 MB/s), shares over 50 GB and I can't download anything from him.
-
Are you aware of the fact that fake files still get hashed ?
There are programs that generate files in a totaly unique way. I'm not talking about those that generate files based on consecutive random numbers. That's how SDC++ first checked it. By TTH. If it contained consecutive bytes, then i was definetly FAKE. But that's not how things go. People can always screw around with files.
My favorite is to create a random .uha archive, passw it, then rename it and archive it some more into .kgb ! Then rename it once more into .iso or .avi ! It's not such a hard thing to do.
That 'non-tth crap' is still allowed by many hubs. Why you ask ? Because of the numbers, man ! The numbers ! That's how hubs get popular. People see 5.000 users, they get like "Oh, the more, the merryer" "I'll sure find what the hell I'm looking for out of 5.000 people" ! And that's not fair at all !!! oDC is a LEECHER's tool.
And people seem to like corrupted files (yeah, right / i was using oDC for a year or so and not once did an AVI not play or found a corrupt MP3) as long as they're happy not having to wait for the hashing process to finish.
From all the hubs i've visited (that show user tags) about 50% users were using oDC !!!
-
People using oDC are to be considerd LEECHERS since we can't get their filelist.
-
I also think hashing is stupid.
I do. ^_^

Don't think of it as blocking. Think of it as... Um... Like a... "Not-listing-when-they-search-stuff-that-we-share" option.
I mean OPTION. I would definetly check/uncheck it the checkbox that checks to see if it says "Check this checkbox to check if the checked user is checking up on you and searching like a pro leeching lamer with the stuff you share". :blushing:
But not on Christmas. This is what I did las year. I've seeded like crazy on bt and shared everything I had on DC. That was my present to the world. 1.2 TB in just 4 days ! I even shared my DVD drives (using a quiet-inducing low-speed accsessing program wich I'm not going to name)
So I know what I'm doing. It's just that I'm pissed off by the fact they can download and I can't.
Is it wrong to be selfish ? I think not.
