  1. I was using Avast until my recent OS reinstall. Then I realised that the Comodo Personal Firewall I was using, now comes with antivirus software included - in a security suite called Comodo Internet Security (CIS). I was very satisfied with the firewall so I installed it and am satisfied with this integrated solution as well. So I am using Comodo now.

I think Windows 7 firewall is fine personally. How fast is Comodo at scanning?

Microsoft Security Essentials. Had Nod32 before this but decided to give MS a chance.

I've tried MSE before, used a lot of memory but it's a decent free alternative.

  2. Hi apex experts,

I am using apex for long now and I think its a great tool, but recently I wanted to delete my "User offline " marked objects and it took quite a long to select and delete each object; I just like to know if there is a possibility to select/delete by one click all objects that are marked "User offline".

    thanks

    dada17

    Hi dada17,

Try using Windows > Close all offline PM messages

  3. I'm not sure you know what you are talking about. Or why do you talk about DHT when named problems paid for every hub and is not DHT specific? DHT = virtual hub and that's why same rules should be applied on DHT like on another hubs.

The fundamentals in actually connecting with DHT is different to connecting to another hub from a user stand point.

And when you enable DHT, hub still can detect and boot user instantly.

  4. Hmmmm, not sure that DHT being automatically enabled is really a good thing for private hubs but I guess most people wouldn't know to enable it so it's better off being on by default.

In any case, it's simple enough to block clients with DHT enabled hub-side for private hubs so good job bringing more features in ;)

Yeah, it's an issue we have been considering since it was first introduced. Private hubs have had plenty of time to detect and manage DHT users correctly. The benefits to public hub users is brilliant and like you said, not many users would know how to enable it (but would be able to disable it with a message from hub).

  5. Let's find out what the majority of DC users have installed for their Anti-Virus software...maybe we might see something interesting. This should also help as a knowledge based article for those looking for Anti-Virus while using ApexDC++ or any other program.

    I personally use NOD32. ;)

  6. But it's the user who breaks privacy and not DHT. It's user who shares such private material and same problem can appear when he is connected to another hub. It's not limited to DHT only.

Lee: DHT is just experimental option, so it is in Advanced settings. When it is maximally optimized and all bugs are fixed than it will be moved to some other page - sharing or upload page. I was also thinking about putting it into Favorite hubs (as non-deletable item) where user could connect/disconnect or select auto-connect (by (un)checking the checkbox).

How do you mean, so that it could be disabled on a per hub basis?

Agreed about experimental, but because it's such an important feature it still should be moved from Advanced and easily accessible.

  7. This is something we're discussing in another topic.

DHT is a global network of users that is designed to help improve sources and therefore download speed. You can read more about it here. It can also be turned off at your discretion.

I'll close this so we can continue receiving feedback in one topic. ;)

  8. Renamed topic title appropriately.

I already gave an example of that. Just imagine some files are shared that contains information that can be used to identify hub participants. A private hub is by definition a place where stuff is shared among a limited group of people. And DHT by definition makes the private material non-private.

Agreed. So make sure you detect that DHT is enabled and disconnect those users.

You are banning everybody on 1.3.5 because they *could* be running DHT. No need to ban specific versions, detect and ban the use of the feature.

Beowulf: There is no need to stop using ApexDC++. The two solutions you have are to either supply a message to the user on entry, or configure your own client that will be constantly out of sync with development. DHT setting will not be reset again in terms of users upgrading from previous versions. Once a user has disabled DHT, it will never again be enabled without the user's permission.

How about moving the option of enabling and disabling DHT into the Sharing settings page? This seems more appropriate than buried in advanced. Big Muscle, what do you think? I'd prefer being able to right click on the DHT status bar like in utorrent and enabling/disabling on the fly though. You managed to take a look at that?

  9. When uTorrent came with DHT enabled, private trackers banned it yes. Pretty soon after they made sure that all torrents on private trackers had DHT disabled with a method in place to determine this.

We aren't being "elitist". We are sending this information to the hub. A clear message of how to disable this feature is all that is needed. If your users decide not to follow these simple instructions, maybe they feel the hub they are connecting to isn't worth the effort?

I think we need more input from you hub owners in our development, rather than once a version is pushed. Maybe we can work something out with that.

Mek: It was reset after upgrading to 1.3.5.

  10. Too the user that started this pointless thread is it worth blocking new clients and having security vulnerabilities over one lousy feature aint it better to set up a simple checking system to see if DHT is enabled instead

Think about that before you comeback and reply to me

The guy has no authority to block or unblock new clients. His hub operator should come and continue this discussion so everyone is happy :)

This topic is not pointless, because we are trying to suggest setting up a system to check DHT .

  11. There isn't a forum for IP.Tracker, I have setup a custom redirect forum. And IPB's nature is to have redirects always shown as unread.

Maybe in the next version of IP.Tracker they will allow an option to display it directly on the forums.

  12. Point your hub owner to this topic, and tell him to reply with his stance if need be. DHT can be detected when a user enters their hub and they can block the user from entering with a clear message as to why. For example:

"You have been disconnected because we have detected the DHT global network is running. We do not allow this in our private hub for user's security. Please disable this by going to Settings > Advanced > "Publish shared files on DHT" and reconnect."

If your hub owner continues to block all future versions of ApexDC++, users are open to a lack of compatibility and future development opportunities.

  13. Introduction

ApexDC++ is a Peer-2-Peer (P2P) program that connects to the Direct Connect (DC) network.

    What is P2P?

P2P is a term used that describes a network of users that can connect directly to one other and share resources.

    What is Direct Connect?

Direct Connect is a Peer-to-Peer File Sharing protocol that allows users to chat to others via a centralised hub and share files with each other. The beauty of the network is that users can search and download files while chatting to users. DC is made up of multiple clients - ApexDC++, DC++, StrongDC++. Users running either of these programs can download between each other no matter which they choose.

The network is centralised, meaning it requires a hub/node where users connect to in order to share and chat. ApexDC++ comes with a ?do=embed' frameborder='0' data-embedContent>>discentralised method of download files - ?do=embed' frameborder='0' data-embedContent>>DHT. The advantage of this is that if a hub is offline, the user can still access users outside of this hub to find more sources. This inevitably will speed up the download process.

    What is Advanced Direct Connect?

Advanced Direct Connect (better known as ADC) is more secure protocol that ApexDC++ (along with StrongDC++ and DC++) is compatible with. ADC supports UTF-8 unicode, better encryption, and has unlimited protocol extensibility.

    What is Open Source?

ApexDC++ and the majority of programs connected to DC are Open Source. This allows cross-compatibility between users and the ability for anybody to use the code to compile. The advantages to this approach are that anybody can contribute to a project and improve it.

  14. Whenever a new version of Apex is released, and download is mandatory, I cannot get the exe in the setup file. I need to have someone else download it for me and send it to me in messenger. In the meanwhile, I am not able to get into Apex because Apex closes if you don't download the new version. This problem happens on all computers in my home...I have tried it on 4 different computers. Additionally, if the person I get to download it for me downloads the entire setup file, and sends the whole setup file to me, it comes to me without the exe. He has to send only the exe for me to be able to get it. Do you have any idea why this happens? This is the only client or program or application that I have this problem with. Right now, I cannot reboot my main computer because I won't be able to get into my client, and I run a hub on that computer. I am not able to get into Apex right now on my laptop[ because I rebooted it. Please help me with this very frustrating problem.

    Hey Renee,

Have you tried downloading the Slim package and seeing whether you can get the exe? It seems like your firewall or anti-virus might be blocking this. Maybe try disabling that temporarily if you cannot download the slim version.

  15. A new update to ApexDC++ is now available to download. This version comes with DHT enabled by default and can be switched off in settings. We believe it will enhance our users' download experience by finding more sources for files. We have a What is DHT? guide for anybody wanting to find out more information.

You can read the full release notes or download the update immediately from our download page.

Please use our new tracker to report any issues with this version.

  16. DHT now comes enabled by default with 1.3.5 and above.

    What is DHT?

A Distributed Hash Table (DHT) is a hash table allowing nodes (the user) to be connected to each other without being in the same hubs. The advantage of this is that when you are searching for more users to download from, you do not have to be in the same hub as the user. DHT will automatically search the users you need across the global network of users.

    What is the advantage?

    • You reach more users, and affectively have more sources to download from
    • Faster download speeds
    • Find more sources for rare files in your download queue
    What does DHT store?

DHT uses the CID, IP and port from a user. It does not connect to anybody else inside a private hub, only the user with DHT enabled.

    How do I disable it?

Go to File > Settings and then Advanced > "Publish shared files on DHT". Here is a screenshot:

I am a hub owner, and do not want users with DHT enabled on my hub.

When a user is connected to DHT, ApexDC++ sends SUP message to the hub (ADC). That way the hub owner can detect and send the user a message explaining how to disable DHT before entering the hub.

  17. We apologise for the recent downtime that the forums received over the past week. We encountered a problem when upgrading to the latest version of IPB, our forum software. This has been resolved after extending our support license with the company.

On a positive note, we have been progressing with program development and should see 1.3.5 soon. This new update will bring, among others, an important change - DHT will come enabled by default. It provides users with the ability to find more sources and achieve faster downloads. We have been testing it and feel it's ready to push to everybody. It is possible to disable this in settings.

As always, we are still heavily focusing on 2.0 and will provide teasers at some point. :)
