  1. Haven't answered on this one.

And he does not like that in this case it would be better to create another mod, since it would mean that the current one has some disadvantages.

I just cannot understand why create so many clones with very little feature differences, if we can make a good, reliable and extensible program! Dozens of positive results in other projects. DC is somehow special in this way...

  2. Yes, really good example. For me the BG translation of Windows is like "Рядовой Иванов, развернуть орудие влево и произвести залп по танку противника".
I can make a screenshot of any part for you, if you wish to compare :)

Desktop is "Работен плот", what else to say.

Desktop - "Рабочий стол" here :P

Of course, they are invisible and everywhere like...
As a mere mortal, haven't heard or seen anything about them :D

KGB is now FSB though :D

    Товарищ, знай - пройдет она,

    И демократия и гласность,

    И вот тогда госбезопасность

    Припомнит наши имена (с) :)

I'm rather socialist than democrat though, but this is another story :)

Hey, what's the nationality of Lenin & Trocki?

Trocki AFAIK jewish, not sure about Lenin. Some of his relatives were jewish, but there also were russian or even kalmyk, AFAIK, as I haven't read much about him.

  3. amp is from the people who like to suggest rather than splitting resources by creating smth new.

And he does not like that in this case it would be better to create another mod, since it would mean that the current one has some disadvantages.

Not only suggest, I also like to help others, report bug even helping to fix them, contributing code. Unfortunelly I'm not very experienced in C++ program for providing fixes here, I have much more experience in x86 assembler and php programming (strange combination, isn't it?). I also have a couple of IPB mods on invisionize.com, but I have another nick there :)

  4. Argh, my english is still much imperfect ;).

    Open svn and public betas
I meant "They have open svn and public betas, and you have none of this". I'm not asking you to open your svn for public as soon as possible, just wondering why won't you do this.

    You prefer getting nothing instead?

    Prefer getting more instead :)

Please read my post(s) again, you have managed to mis the point once again...
I got that you and other coders doesn't have much free time.

I see nothing wrong with it, as long as the "mod of a mod" actually does something that makes difference

But I do. Why we haven't so many forks of miranda-im, jimm, filezilla and other popular opensource software. I'd better write a plugin or contribute code or, at least, send a detailed bug report to authors, rather than creating of new software. So, I've sent bug reports to miranda-im forums, I've made contrubitions to jimm project, but in case of DC I'm feeling that creating of a new client is not so bad idea... And I find this wrong.

Now why should I spent my time studying about stuff, when i can be perfectly happy with the current system, and ensure that there is no complaints this way
I would recommend you read it in any case, because it is interesting and helps in easy-to-use UI design. I've read a some articles and a book, which took about 1 day of reading, but i'm not sorry for the lost time :)

maybe you said "Could you please", but from the content of your posts flows that we must, because you want it

Excuse me for my bad english, sometimes I cannot line up proper intonation or turn of speech, so my posts might be rude.

Furthermore, you're developing another client and I'm not asking you to open your cvs or public more betas. So you may sleep easily.

    We're not an OS project

OS = OpenSource in this case ;).

  5. How about making of a new shortcut - /bandwidth or something like that, which would show how many up and down slots are taken, how many users in upload queue and, possibly, current upload and download speeds?

    For example

** amp bandwidth: 3 download slots, 10 upload slots, 40 users in upload queue, 60K/100K (up/down).

I was also thinking of shortcut manager, where you can create and share with others your shortcuts. You may add some macroses for values (like with /w) and people will be able to add freeform messages.

  6. DC++ has had major delays between some releases, they have an open svn that's true...
Open svn and public betas ;). So, as many OS projects do.

Lee has given you an update on this topic

    A drop in the ocean...

Most likely true, but I like the fact that you miss my point in that...
I meant, that univ is cool, yes, but not so big argument to me. Furthermore, Lee is a coordinator, not coder, isn't he?

They don't grow in trees, you know

As for me, I found it strange, that creating a mod of a mod is more popular than contributing and getting envolved... Something's wrong here at that point...

And how does this have anything to do with the quote you associated it with...
There you can read WHY people do not read such posts and HOW to make them read! Unfortunelly, can't recommend you any title, because I doesn't know where proper name in english.

amp, could you show some law which says that CVS must be available? that developer has to release new build when you say that you want it??

I'm not saying "MUST", but "COULD YOU PLEASE?".

And I know your point of view from your forums. I haven't registered there, but I read a couple of topics.

  7. Nah, we don't want to spoil the surprise from you
But community is dead without any updates. We here just waiting and talking and debate... I still can't figure if previous debates have any results though. Also as my feature requests or bug reports :)

And releasing more public previews won't happen, as none of us is working on this project full time

    Envolve more developers! :)

especially now that Lee is at uni
Hehe, i'm on the last year in my univ ;) "Best days of your life" as it said here :)

That won't stop users from complaining plus I know how many don't read the sticky topics / forum rules at all...

It's all about usability and ergonomics. Read about them, it helps in UI designs much.

with a small open-source project with a development team whose numbers can be counted on your fingers
I've put an example couple of post above this thread ;)

We want to provide users with major changes each public release, which is why it's taking so long

Imagine, vanilla DC++ has such delays between releases and won't show you any sources or betas :)

  8. Um, Vista doesnt have a cvs, or daily builds given to a large amount of users
Hm, it doesn't have cvs because it's closed-source. But I saw lots of builds which are not official Beta nor RC ones. So, it's almost like nightly builds :). I haven't checked, but some say, they allows everyone to join betatesting for free.

Why have you decided to take over this linux discussion with a general discussion of development?

Because of similarity of the situation ;).

Mods take our popularity, our users, which is a lot for a freeware/open source community.
I've tryed a lot of SDC mods. And everytime conclusion was - it's the same SDC but with some lil' cosmetic change - another logo and icon set, one lil crappy new function - and thats all. I've stopped on your mod just because I hope you (dev-team) are not so stubborn for new ideas as BM in some cases. And I wish to see not a bit modded version of SDC, but a cool new client ;).

Anyway, we're not going to have a public svn, so don't ask.

Sounds like i'm a secret agent, willing to know your country's biggest secret :). Maybe you'll at least post a changelog or so and make more public previews? Say, one per two weeks? :)

many people are so kind out there that they redistribute compiled builds, and thus users using them doesn't necessarily have any idea of what kind of build he or she is using...

You have a version number in window title. Put a disclaimer in support forum, that versions above #LAST_OFFICAL# are betas and unsupported.

  9. Menus/texts are shortest (I believe from my experience with BG, RU, ES) in English.
Argh, you knew that! English translation in most cases have shorter words and phrases, so in some apps UI become distorted. But still, many people here asks for native language in the app. One of the most common question of the newbies in our hub (most people uses SDC) is "where can i get a russian translation of sdc?". So it much nicer if the app has is in native language out of box.

    --OFF

Funny thing about word's length. Some researchers found, that in battles between americans and japanese, americans were more efficient and responsive. Thats because average english command's length is about 5 letters, but japanese is 10 letters. Russian average command's length is about 7 letters, but in real situation commanders switchs to swearing and average length become 3 letters!

For example: "Рядовой Иванов, развернуть орудие влево и произвести залп по танку противника" vs "Вася, х@ярь по танку слева!"

    -- OFF

you need to get rid of the KGB guys at last

KGB guys? Nope, haven't seen them ;)

  10. Хм... Может я проще ответить попытаюсь?)

Еще нашел очень интересную штучку в rmDC++, Это управление в юзерлисте что будет показано типа Share ip Description...

  11. I'm not entirely sure what you mean by this
I mean that program is a freeware, only thing you can expect is donation. Mods won't take your bread, so why bother about them?

Forced to be open source, again I'm not 100% sure what you mean here

I meant that making a mod of opensource program you are forced to make it opensource too. This means, that you may check source-code of any mod and take good idea to your project.

to end the flow of complaints regarding cvs versions stability plus the one already mentioned by Lee

Hey, cvs is just a source code. If a user can compile it, he would also be able to handle it. Many projects offers even nightly builds, for those who are on the edge of developing process. They put a disclaimer about stability and also have a place to report bugs from new builds. Large community with lots of testers might help in improving of functionality and stability. Why do you think betas of new Vista are so prevalent?

  12. I'm trying to discuss whole Apex development :)

StrongDC++ does not allow you to download and compile the latest cvs, since people use his source and release their own open source client on the latest features before him!

As it doesn't paid, why bother? :)

And as they forced to be opensource too, you may get good ideas from them too!

  13. Ok, here's one example. http://www.jimm.org/ My favourite mobile icq-client. Development team seems to be even smaller than yours. But the project has public cvs access and frequent cvs builds (betas). So, community can see how its going, test new builds much. Some people (like me :)) can also download latest cvs code and try to build it.

So, where we can discuss the latest client features, make new feature requests or even contribute usefull code!

And what we have here? Lots of discussion threads, unanswered feature requests and bug reports. We have to wait months to see if something is changed during last release :-/

  14. Forcing people who are too curious to pay for betas (become subscribers)? Or to knock down concurents ("opensource concurents" sounds... hm... ridiculous?) by disallowing them to use your latest code? I can imagine a couple of other reasons...

  15. I personally prefer all in English, but still...
Windows translation in Russian is quite good. Or I just adapted to it too much). I prefer russian translation if it's really good (I prefer official translations, as far as they could be normal). I do not like that "русефекатор" thingy. I saw an ok/cancel dialog in uTorrent with two "Отмена" buttons when using russian translation. Really, I'm not crazy :). So, I dislike russian in uTorrent. But if translation is good, why not to switch to it automaticly and use your favorite app in your native language? So question is to make really good official translations, which would be included into distro.

some programs automatically switch themselves into my OS language once they're installed and i *hate* it when this happens

Switch back and forget :). I can't remember any app I use, which do so and I dislike it's translation. Most commonly they do not now anything about OS language :) English, spanish, french and chinese are more common. Russia is a small country, you know :)
