Share Hiding

Is there any way to have a different share for different hubs?

For example, your on a hub that allows porn and another that doesnt.

I currently use apex and another client to do this. any way around that in APEX?

Right now - no

PS It's not really my req. but it would be nice to extend current "Hide Share mod" in Apex to do 2 things:

- hide share but respond to searches (sound silly but has point)

- send FLs to favorite and OPs

this does not make any sence. if i want to hide share "i freakin want to hide share" that means i dont want lurkers, members, vips, ops, even owners to see wtf i share in other hubs - if i am permited to do so in a hub anyway. it measn i dont want my files to be seen via search, via high-level clearance. or whatever!

if an OP decides to let me hide share he wont ask, he wont even want to know what i share in other hubs. why would he couse i wont share it anyway in that hub?

i just dont see the point your leaning too. please explain??

I don't use it myself. It's not really my idea but my friend admin who want to share some files among only trusted people and fellow ops. I won't comment why the first idea, but option to share for favorite users isn't bad imho.

I think it would be a good idea to have an option to share difrent on difrent hubs.

Will it ever be done??

Nope current protocol does not support it at all. You can either share or if your an OP dont share.

It is possible and already done... And you don't have to be an OP to hide your share.

At the moment, there is no intention to add this to the client.

Would be great to have that feature on ApexDC. As he said, some specialised hubs (anime in my case) demand certain files only in share. I wanted to ask for that feature my self, but forgot about it. The hide share feature is good as it is now in my opinion. Cant wait to see the next public release, i know it will be great :P

Yes, I agree it would be good, however I won't really use it. But it is quite complicated if you think about it a bit... How many share would you use? You would need to keep different filelist/hashes for each share. How would you sort it - which hub, which share - in favorites? Would you set a 'default' share to use when entering a hub first? And having different share could result in some conflicts: you log onto a hub with your 'default' share, someone grabs your list, begins downloading from you, then you change your share for that hub, and the file that was downloaded from you happens not to be in the other share...

I don't find it too complicated (at theory) - Apex checks from which hub the FL request comes from, gives the FL associated with that hub. How to set different shares ? Method 1 - select your filelist by browsing/*for this you should be able to create and edit filelists (f.e create new filelist, select your files, make hashindex, save it as .xml.bz2 (complicated but the most efficient way)*/ and method 2 - have 10/or whatever/ different shares and select number of share for that hub.

If you change your filelist then the user will get missing error, so pretty much nothing happens for you (the same when you delete shared files from your HDD).But anyway - the user shouldn't download stuff that is not meant to be shared on that hub :P

And yes, you do need to save different hashes for each share, but i suggested a method to solve this (it was on the same topic, if you want - make a search)

Yes, but if you delete it, you probably do that on purpose - you do not need the file anymore, there's no free space on your hard drive etc. But if you simply change your share, you could upload it, and maybe you don't know that the user was trying to download it from you, but you are blocking it in a way.

Yes, and to change your FL on that hub you must have some purpose, don't you think :P

Example: in your def.share there are installed programs, porn, lossy music, or whatever. So you enter some hub where some of this is forbidden and you change your share to obey the rules there. You don't want peaple to download forbidden files from you...

Not the same point if you delete a file so you are not able to share it anymore, or when you just change share (can be simply because you don't want to share that much in that specific hub).

If you want to share it so much - add the file in that sharelist or invite the user to another hub where he can download it...

It's your right to share whatever you want (except illegal files, it depends on the hub what these are) - if you don't want to share 'that much' then don't... (sorry if i didn't catch your point)

That is stealing users, you can (and most likely will) get banned for that if someone finds out...

I am really hesitating, both of you have some right, but still it is the user to decide. If we accept Noctis is right, user must not have the choice to exclude a single file, and OPs will be kicking all the time for installed files. :) On the other hand, if user is about to "steal", he can use X number of clients/instances for it. I am for different shares per hub.

My point is that if you still want so much to upload that file to the user, then you can invite him to another hub or let him invite you in a hub where you can share that file (if he wants)... Or simpler - just add the file to that hub's share ( duh :) ). No one is obliged to upload anything to anybody... I cant keep my HDD full all the time so ppl can download their sh!t(sorry, but i must use it too...)

If your file is not in your hub-specific-share then add it, if it's vs hub's rules(or your wishes), the user should have started downloading it in the first place.

And one more thing - no one forces your to use different shares for each hub...

One way or another, I still think that the most straight way to solve different share is by using more than one client... :)

It is possible and it will be more straight forward in my point of view - just select your FL.(the same as saying that the most straight forward way to enter several hubs is with several instances)

Your method's downsides:

1.Several clients take more HDD space.

2.You have to use several apex instances, imagine if you want to follow 5 hubs and 5 PM chats each on different instance...

3.More RAM and CPU.

4.Different logs,statistics,settings.

New method's downsides:

- None (or at least I don't see any...)

And if you still wanna use your way, then do it. Every user can chose for himself...

Yep, running two diff. clients is the only way to be in those special hubs. But thats not desirable for me and thats why a share per hub feature would rock.

p.s. if any one knows about a client which already got that, plz pm me :)

it is, cool. :)

I would use the feature if it was provided, as long as it didn't cost too many resources. On the other hand, we would have to ensure the anti-leeching side of this feature was done properly, couldn't let it allow users to have no share (unless OP) if they're sharing anything on other hubs. If implemented, I'm rather sure it would be abused, which would lead to a bad reputation etc. Anyway, as has been previously said, there is no intention to add this feature to ApexDC++ at the moment.
