  1. Could Apex strip off the ID3 tags while hashing, similar to what Shareaza does. Shareaza ignores the tags while it hashes the file, but keeps the tags on the file. This way the hashes don't change every time a person changes the tagging, increasing sources for MP3 files that are exactly the same without the tags. I'm not sure if this would be as useful on DC as it is on a P2P network like that, but I thought I'd just throw the idea out there. Plus, if you wanted to check the code out for it, Shareaza is open source anyways.

  2. It's been cool the last couple of days (20-25C) around here (Toronto area), last week it hit 35C, but later on in the summer it'll go up to 45C with the humidity. It's usually 30/35 without and 45C with the humidity in the city. Heat doesn't bother me at all, like last summer when I was up north at my cottage it was 40C in the sun with no humidity and it didn't bother me, but the humidity is killer especially when you have a giant head of hair and hairy legs :D. There's almost an 80-85C difference between the coldest and the warmest days in this area...

  3. I've had a cyclic redundancy check error on my harddrive before. What I did to fix it was wipe it with zeros with Linux, then reformatted it with a full NTFS format and it's worked fine ever since. You will obviously lose everything on it doing it this way though.

  4. no developer has the right to tell any user whats right or wrong its up to the user to decide. Who are we to take the moral high ground when we are all copyright infringers if you want to get technical about morality anyone who downloads anything on dc is a thief ! What client I use or what mod I use is my choice and if the hub doesnt like it its thier right to kick me it has nothing to do with who invented the technology or who improved on the technology. If we start punishing people who are creative and inventive there will be no improvments at all. I remember when everyone said strong dc was wrong. Without the kind of people who make mods apex wouldnt exist. thats my 2 cents.

Yes the developer does have the right to do that. They know what's good for the network, and what isn't, unlike some n00b who doesn't know how to even forward a port or knows what a TCP packet is used for. There are very good reasons for blocking the users who use these programs, they bring back the DC network even farther back into the past compared to where the bulk of P2P networks are. They create excessive traffic (as if DC isn't already ****ty enough as it is for this) bogging down the other nodes and the hubs they are connected to. To make a mod, the developer should be responsible enough to know what his/her modifications will be and how they will affect the network.

StrongDC and ApexDC try to do what they believe is right for the network, implementing features they believe will not harm the other nodes. There was a time when Apex (peerwebdc at the time) was going to make it more than 10segments, then I decided to make a big stink about it and banned it from the peerweb hub until they removed it, so don't say I blindly follow these programs.

  5. I think i can help you guys, well not me, but i may know the man of the hour. I'm an OP on our university's DC hub, been using apexdc since you guys started, well enough about me, the guy that runs our hub and server is an Computer electronics engineer, linux boffin and just to say the least an amazing programmer, i'll give the code to him and ask him what he can do, will get back to you guys asap!

That'd be great if he were able to help Almighteycow, and tell him he has the chance to make $130 in the process (I'm sure it'll help him make up his mind... he is a university student, and they always need money;))

  6. Perhaps another email should be sent out... if someone hears about $100, that might be a good incentive. Or, if there are no takers and almightey can't do it, we could always hire out (i'm not sure how far $100 would go, although there isn't tons of coding I guess, just converting it to code linux can use).

  7. Figured I could update the stats from my mirror which hosts PeerWeb DC++ 0.41, for November it was downloaded 5898 times totaling 15.3GB of bandwidth. Hopefully the people who download this old version will or have upgraded to ApexDC++. At least it's a good sign of the popularity of the client.

  8. Just noticed this as I was looking through my website stats for September. PeerWeb DC++ 0.41 was downloaded a total of 4869 times (suddenly sky rocketed during the second half :) ) accounting for 12.61GB. I've kept up those files because they're linked to from several third party websites (1000-1500 referrals were from download.com). Also, 8GB was from the U.S. (that's not all just PWDC, it also includes the Gnutella Cache I have). Just thought you guys would be interested! (directory: http://mirror.farrugiafamily.com/programs/apexdc/ )

  9. of course, some people would answer no to this question, but actually, i know of a hub where i was which did allow searchers of this kind to connect, because of a simple reason: if the searcher finds the file he's looking for on your hub, he'll come on your hub to download, and he might like it and stay on it since it's the hub that had the file he's been searching for so long...

i've heard of 2 tools that can to this: MoGLO (tried it) and DCGUI.

MoGLO gave me very good results, but this was some years ago, and i think MoGLO is usually banned now. however, if you find a hub like the one i've described before, it will still work.

never tried DCGUI, and i'm not sure this one's integrated multi-hub search can be banned.

MoGLO is a pain in the ass, they spam hubs and most hubs now have Anti-MoGLO spam features. I (illegally) crashed one guys connection for coming on often then blocked his whole ISP range in my router. It's not a good feature and it'll definately tarnish Apex's reputation.

[edit]a bit late on the post...

  10. I don't see the ftp/http feature being used by the masses. I mean most users are going to download the file from dc, and i aspect you're going to need to enter the ftp address manually in order to download from it.

If tunna were to write it for you (like he says he might), why not add it anyways?

  11. But which is faster and uses less resources? That or blackbox, that may look visually simpler than a lot of black box setups, but it's by no means faster I wouldn't have thought, with the XP theme and posible sliding start menu etc.

Who cares about resources if you have a good computer :) If you were worried about them you'd spend more money on RAM, hard drives, and a CPU. If you want more speed, also try to disable paging of the XP Kernel, that way it runs off of the RAM instead of the HDD.

  12. Why not just "Remember chat window size" and "Apply one size for all hubs" as its suboption in Settings?

I think doing that will add too much bulk to the settings. Why not just doing something simple like the double arrow like you get in an MSN chat box where you hand adjust the size?

  13. of course, but maybe the proxy concept should be reinforced in this case - like an advanced version of freenet perhaps. I mean, people need to be pushed to no alternatives to start thinking seriousely of alternatives.

The problem with Freenet is that it brings itself to its knees under high loads and the network almost becomes unusable. Almost all of the anonymous P2P networks are slow and kinda crappy unless you stay online a couple of days. P2P is fun because of the risk :)

no sooner than we get wi-fi globally.

Nah, I don't wi-fi, I want my fibre optics... my ISP suppose to have it out by next year, but I doubt it :D

  14. And good time for all Darknet kinds of clients, as well for the new ectp protocol. Every action has its counter-action, not only in physics.

I'm dreaming about a fully encripted DC++ software and protocols, so THEY can't be able to find out THE IP. Furthermore, their attempt to decript would make THEM criminals, if THEY do not change the laws.

I don't really know if encryption would work for DC unless you do one of several things: public DC hubs cease to exist, you create a network similar to freenet where everyone is a proxy cache, or you create keys that only those who know it can add you (like WASTE). Encryption doesn't hide your IP, it can mask the communication between clients, but if a company decides to download from you, they have your IP (unless you use a proxy and slow your speeds down).

  15. Info from host: http://forums.instantnetworks.net/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=267

    Two days ago:

Updated. The server was formatted using the volume type LVM2 which is used for software RAID. However as stated before some data has been corrupted on the volume and there exists very few tools to fix and recover these errors. We are working with Canadian support technician who are working on recovering every byte possible, but at this point we have to advise clients that it might not be a possibility.
    Yesterday:

We still have the volume setup, but thus far have been unable to restore the data. We have attached a new volume to get customers sites up on a temporary basis or if they do not want to wait they may restore from their backups.

  16. why to "fix" something that isn't broken :) users with limited RAM / slow HD can just limit the max hash speed.

It's not that i don't like the idea of improving hashing speed, but i consider myself not familiar enough with TTH to go mess around with it.

Heh, the only way to make it hash even faster is to compile CPU specific versions much like Shareaza does sometimes. Those things hash huge files with all four of 'razas hashes (ed2k, md5, sha1, tth) in very small amounts of time. But it's too much of a hassle.

That would need constant monitoring of the hashed folders....

Yes it would, but almost every P2p client does it, DC lags a long ways away from mainstream P2P. Of course, it could be just the way that DC++ was made.

  17. ;)

    _ Early MARCH, i recon

    if its bandwith reasons

would be nice if there was a Magnet or Ed2k link for copys of PWDC++ 041

people still want it its very popular,

    heres some links

although the links aint very active, ed2k has a few sources

    these should be correct links

    keep Peerweb.DC alive !!

Just use those links in the Tech Geeks Online Hub, I'm sure you'll pick up a ton (if you already have DC of course :P)
