Windows Vista and 7 users with UAC enabled may often encounter an "Error saving hash data: Access is denied" message if they haven't given ApexDC++ the correct privileges to run. This is extremely easy to solve:

  • Right click on ApexDC++'s exe file or shortcut. This can be found on the desktop or Start > Programs > ApexDC++.
  • Select Properties
  • Navigate to the Compatibility menu item (see attached screenshot)
  • Select Run as administrator
  • Restart ApexDC++
Once the program has finished hashing your files, it can successfully save the hash data to the Program Files directory.

Best strategy imho is to not install it into program dir since there are more complications storing stuff there if UAC is enabled

Gonna be a small fix in next version of sDC++ that will end up as soon as apex merges source with sdc++

although handles to the registry will always require admin access

Only handles to HKLM need administrator privileges, HKCU is fine. By the way, it sounds great to save all data to users folder, so you'll need no administrator access at all.

? Best way i've found to do it, while a bit long winded, seems to be the most secure. This way Apex isn't running as admin, and also you don't have to disable UAC:

Copied from my Hub's FAQ:

Q: Windows Vista/ Windows 7 Specific: I am seeing a â??Error saving hash dataâ? or â??Access Deniedâ? error message?
Also: DC++ isn't keeping my file list up to date?
Also: I can't download people's file lists
A: Because of Vista/7's stringent security rules in the 'Program Files' or 'Program Files (x86)' folders, programs cannot write to their own system folders the way DC++ does. To overcome this issue, follow these steps:

  • Navigate to C:\Program Files\(or Program Files (x86) if you're running x64)\
  • Right Click the Apex DC++ folder
  • click 'Security' or 'Properties'
  • Make sure you're on the Security Tab
  • Click 'Edit' in the middle of the window
  • Click 'Add'
  • Type in 'Everyone'
  • Hit OK
  • With 'Everyone' selected in the top portion, select 'Full Control' in the bottom portion, under 'Allow'
  • Do that for all accounts listed in the top portion
  • CREATOR OWNER may go blank (in the bottom portion), this is fine.
  • Hit OK, Then Apply in the window under, then OK in that same window to close it.
  • If it doesn't start working immediately, Restart DC++, it should now be able to write to its own program files folder.
Works flawlessly.

A simple way for compatibility with Vista/7:
1. Delete the full program.
2. Reinstall and during Setup, specify the folder to install the program, namely the root of drive C: \ Apexdc
3. Now enjoy Posted Image
